ATLAS Experiment@CERN

Through a 2010 partnership with ATLAS Experiment at CERN,home of the Large Hadron Collider, the Projecting Particles was born. Projecting Particles is a series of youth workshops and public performances that explore particle physics through projection art.

Working with middle and high school grades, students travel virtually to the ATLAS control center or experience face-to-face visits with physicists to learn first hand about particle physics. Dr. Steven Goldfarb leads the outreach initiatives. In collaboration with Markus Dorninger, Tagtool app developer, students explore projection techniques to visualize their new understanding. Agnes Chavez brings it together through the coordination of a 3-day youth workshop that culminates with a public projection performance to share with the public. Students discover how radical new theories in particle physics can expand their understanding of the universe and how to communicate their discoveries through the art making process.

The Projecting Particles project was presented as a poster session at the 38th International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP). The presenter was Dr. Luis Flores Castillo, the physicist who was part of the Projecting Particles team invited to the Havana Biennial 2015.

In 2017, the Projecting Particles expanded to include a new series called Lakota Cosmology Meets Particle Physics. The goal of this R&D project is investigate ways to deepen the learning through an intercultural exchange with indigenous communities.
